A Taíno Bone Zemí pendant from the Dominican Republic, dating to the 10th–15th Century AD, carved from manatee bone with a beige patina, and measuring 14.1 cm high, 3.2 cm wide and 1.7 cm deep, in excellent condition with provenance from a German private collection (acquired in Germany in the 1980s) and acquired in 2025 from Casa de Subastas, with CoA.

A Taino Bone Zemí (Idol / Pendant), Dominican Republic, 10th to 15th Century A.D.
Exceptionally well-carved manatee bone zemí depicting a stylized anthropomorphic or avian spirit figure. The piece features large circular eyes with concentric incised rings, a prominent beak-like nose, and intricate geometric and curvilinear motifs covering the body, characteristic of Taíno ritual art. The bone has a beautiful creamy beige patina with natural grain visible, and shows fine detailed engraving typical of high-quality Taíno carvings.
Objects like this were powerful personal amulets or ceremonial pendants, representing protective spirits or deities in Taíno cosmology.
