Description from the seller

Item Description
A striking antique Japanese ikebana (flower-arranging) basket — hanakago — of generous proportions, masterfully woven in an open diagonal twill weave (naname-ami) using wide, flat bamboo splints in two contrasting tones: a warm reddish-brown and a deep charcoal-grey. The interplay of these two colours creates a dynamic, almost painterly surface pattern that moves across the globe-shaped body, giving the basket an unmistakable visual rhythm.
The handle is perhaps the most compelling feature of this piece: a single arc of natural gnarled wood — likely plum (ume) or wisteria branch — selected and shaped to follow a graceful curve, its surface rich with knots, protrusions, and the organic texture of age. This deliberate use of raw, unworked nature (jizai) as a design element reflects the wabi aesthetic at the heart of Japanese craft — the beauty found in imperfection, asymmetry, and natural form.
The base is structured with a neat footing of tightly woven bamboo, with a finely executed six-pointed star (mutsume-ami) pattern visible through the open floor of the basket interior. The overall silhouette — a rounded, slightly bulging body narrowing toward a trimmed foot — recalls the classic marugata (round-form) basket beloved in chabana (tea ceremony flower arrangements).
A piece of considerable character and presence, ideal for display as a sculptural object or for use with a single seasonal branch or bloom.

Size
Height: 35 cm
Width: 21 cm
Depth: 22 cm

Weight
445.5 g

Condition
This basket shows honest age patina consistent with antique use; the bamboo body is intact and structurally sound with natural darkening and minor surface wear, and the gnarled branch handle retains its original form with some loss of surface bark in areas, all of which contributes to the piece's authentic wabi character.
