NO RESERVE - ANTIQUE INDIAN / NEPALESE THARU SILVER HANSULI NECK TORQUE from Nepal, 20th century, silver alloy, 21 cm high by 22 cm wide, original/official, in excellent condition, provenance private collection.
Description from the seller
NO RESERVE - INDIAN / NEPALESE ANTIQUE THARU SILVER "HANSULI" NECK TORQUE.
The hansuli neck torque is worn by women of the Tharu ethnic groups located in north India mountains and south Nepal.
This popular piece of jewelry is worn around the neck and displayed at festivals, weddings, fairs, social gatherings, and important family ceremonies.
The hansuli is considered as a classic piece of jewelry that enhances the beauty of hill women. It is a highly valued type of neck ornament as a rigid necklace, thin at the edges and thicker in the center.
It is primarily made of silver, but in times of prosperity, some also have it made of gold alloy.
Many traditional designs exist such as this one showing a great variety.
Very common in ancient times, the hasuli worn by women and children have different meanings through their designs. If children's hasuli were given by grandparents at birth, they were often adorned with small bells whereas married women wore their heavier hasuli around their necks.
A meaningful tribal jewel and collectable antique tribal necklace for a beautiful, unique and very decorative jewel.
