ローマ青銅製イルカのアップリケ、ローマ帝国、紀元1世紀～3世紀 AD
優雅で高度にスタイライズされた形で聖なる海洋生物を描く、精巧に鋳造されたローマ青銅製イルカのアップリケです。細長い胴体、丸みを帯びた頭部、二叉尾は、ローマの装飾用青銅器で一般的に用いられる美術的慣習を反映しています。イルカはローマ世界の最も重要な海洋象徴の一つで、ネプチューン、安全な航行、繁栄、神聖な保護と結びつけられていました。この種の装飾金具は帝国内の家具、宝箱、儀式用具、車両、建築要素などさまざまな場所に用いられてきました。本品は古代の美しい緑青と茶褐色の patina（緑泥色の腐食・酸化）を魅力的に示しており、鉱物の沈着がある部分が考古学的な趣と美的魅力を高めています。ローマ青銅細工の優雅で感性を喚起する典型的な例です。
