Australia Commercial Covers (1950s-1980s) – DHSS Airmail & Slogan Cancels
Here is an analysis and valuation of the postal covers provided in the images.
These items comprise two distinct categories of modern Australian postal history: standard domestic covers addressed to a Dr. Schneider in Adelaide, and commercial international airmail covers sent from Australia to the UK Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) using the official "CF (N) 321" pre-printed envelopes.
Because these feature common definitive or commemorative stamps from the mid-20th century to the early 1980s, their market value resides primarily in their interest to collectors of postal history, slogan cancellations, or specific commercial mail routes. Individually, they are quite common and carry minimal retail value.
1. The "Dr. Schneider" Domestic Covers (1950s–1960s)
• Lot 8 AUS 114 front.jpg: Features a red 3½d King George VI stamp. Postmarked from South Australia.
• Lot 8 AUS 117 front.jpg: Features a green 1½d Queen Elizabeth II stamp.
• Lot 8 AUS 115 front.jpg: Features a blue 5d Queen Elizabeth II stamp with an Adelaide machine slogan cancellation: "EXPORT IS YOUR BUSINESS / EXPORT WEEK 17TH-23RD OCT." dated 11 Oct 1960.
o (Slightly elevated due to the clear, complete topical slogan cancel).
2. The DHSS Overseas Branch "CF (N) 321" Airmail Covers (1979–1983)
These are standard commercial airmail covers sent to Newcastle upon Tyne, England. They feature the pre-printed "ADP" (Automatic Data Processing) box. While interesting as an example of international bureaucratic mail, the stamps used are highly common.
• Lot 8 AUS 116 front.jpg: 1979 usage with a 55c Christmas stamp (Madonna & Child). Postmark mostly faint.
• Lot 8 AUS 119 front.jpg: 1979 usage with a 55c Christmas stamp, featuring an Adelaide machine slogan cancel: "PLEASE POST CHRISTMAS MAIL THIS WEEK".
• Lot 8 AUS 111 front.jpg: 1981 usage with a 60c Sabot Sailing stamp. Clayton South, Victoria machine cancel.
• Lot 8 AUS 112 front.jpg: 1981 usage with a 60c Christmas stamp (Australian Carol). Clayton South machine cancel.
• Lot 8 AUS 113 front.jpg: 1981 usage with a 60c CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) stamp. Canberra circular date stamp.
• Lot 8 AUS 118 front.jpg: 1981 usage with a 60c Nomad Aircraft stamp. Darlinghurst, NSW circular postmark.
• Lot 8 AUS 120 front.jpg: 1983 usage with a 75c "Lady Don" Manual Fire Engine stamp. Liverpool, NSW circular postmark. Note: This cover is missing the printed "ADP" text inside the box, which is a minor commercial printing variety.
