珍しいながらも広く知られているわけではないが、この種の剣は文献が少ない。しばしば名誉品または部族長の剣として説明されるが、詳しい情報はほとんどない。明らかに、柄と刃の装飾の度合いは、それを非常に高い名品とする。
テテラ族はモンゴ系の文化で、約12万人の構成員を数え、コンゴ民主共和国中部を居住地とする。中央指導者を有する国家として組織化されていない；いくつかの独立した共同体に分かれており、それぞれがいくつかの系統で構成される。これらの集団は、世襲の首長であるココラマニを介して、首相ニャンパラによって統治される。狩猟の長・戦争の長も存在し、政治的指導者の中には女性もいる（Felix, 100 Peoples of Zaire and Their Sculptors）。
