この特徴的な斧は、広がった刃と厚い柄を備え、ムフィヌとラアリの首長の社会的地位を象徴するシンボルでした。他にも多くの文化、特にテケ、ツァヤ、ククヤ、ムボシ、クユなどにも見られます。儀式衣装の一部であり、首長の地位を示す指標でした（Elsen、De fer et de fierté、2003）（最後の写真を参照）
ムフィヌは人口1万から1.5万で、川辺の森林、湿地、サバンナに居住します。彼らには「最高首長」はおらず、独立した複数の首長国が存在します。首長（ mbe ）は村の首長によって選出され、これらの村の首長は部族長（ clan の首長 ）によって選ばれます（Felix、100 Peoples of Zaire and Their Sculpture、1987）
