この種のナイフは、アフリカで最も認識されやすい形の一つで、中央アフリカ共和国とコンゴ民主共和国の境界を挟む高原のサバンナと密林に広がる地域に由来します。ザンデ族、アブンガラ、バランボなどの関連集団が使用したこのナイフは「kpinga」と呼ばれ、18世紀と19世紀のザンデの領土拡張と防衛に不可欠な道具でした。20世紀にはkpingaは王宮の護衛や廷臣が携帯するエリート武器として依然とされ、結婚していない男性にとってしばしば特権的に所持されました。民族的誇りと部族権威の象徴であり、狩猟には用いられませんでした。
このように非常に装飾的で、頭部から足先まで精密に彫刻された作品は、卓越した威信の象徴として展示のために取っておかれていました（Berardi, Standing on Ceremony, 2004; Felix, Kipinga, 1991）。
