古代日本の古墳時代の第6世紀ごろの男性埴輪像として重要なもの。
赤い陶土製で、特注の漆塗り木製台付き。
完全にオリジナルで、古い修復歴あり（首部と破片の接着補修）。
埴輪は古墳時代において主に葬送的な役割を果たしており、墳丘の周囲、時には上に配置されて遺体を来世で伴い、守るために置かれていた。
戦士や従者、権威者の姿を象徴的に描き、死者を霊的世界で仕えるまたは守る役割を担っていた。
墳丘の表面に円形または列をなして置かれ、聖なる空間を区切り、故人の社会的権力を示すとともに、生者の世界と死者の世界を結ぶ儀式的な媒介者としても機能していた。
