Fine Seto-yaki Matcha Tea Bowl by Hachiro Suzuki (Taishi-gama) - "Sou" (Harmony) - With Original Tomobako
Description
This is an exquisite Japanese Matcha tea bowl (Chawan) crafted by the renowned Seto-yaki potter, Hachiro Suzuki (1915-1994), at his kiln, Taishi-gama.
Artist Background:
Hachiro Suzuki was a highly respected ceramic artist based in Seto, Aichi Prefecture. He studied under the legendary artist Tatsukichi Fujii and was known for his mastery of traditional Seto glazes and wood-fired kiln (anagama) techniques. His works have been exhibited at prestigious venues including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and numerous national exhibitions in Japan, such as Nitten and the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition. He was also a recipient of the Dark Blue Ribbon Medal (Konju Hosho) for his contributions.
The Piece:
This bowl is titled "Sou" (奏), which refers to "playing music" or "harmony," often created for the annual Imperial New Year's Poetry Reading (Utakai Hajime) theme.
Design:
The bowl features a robust, earthy texture typical of wood-fired pottery. It is adorned with a beautiful green ash glaze (Natural Ash Glaze/Oribe style) that evokes the image of a forest or deep pine needles, harmonizing with the cream-colored base.
Form:
It has a powerful, slightly cylindrical "Wa-nari" shape that fits comfortably in the hands, with a prominent "Koudai" (foot) showing the natural coarse texture of the Seto clay.
Marking:
The artist's signature mark is impressed on the side of the foot.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. No chips or cracks. It comes with the original signed and sealed wooden storage box (Tomobako) and a printed biography of the artist.
Dimensions:
Height: 10 cm
Diameter: 11 cm
Weight: 420 g
