オパールは、水分含有量が3〜21%の水和型シリカです。実際、この水分の透過性がオパールを親水性にしています。
オパールは比較的低温で生成され、ほとんどあらゆる岩の亀裂に産出します。最も一般的には酸化鉄鉱層（リノイト、砂岩、流紋岩、粘土石灰岩、玄武岩）とともに見られます。宝石性オパールだけが内部色の変動的な/interplayを示します。
