Bronze openwork finger ring from the Viking period (c. 9th–11th century), with a geometric lattice motif; inner diameter ca. 22 × 18 mm, height 12 mm, intact in very fine archaeological condition with dark patina, provenance Privécollectie, acquired 1990 from Europe.
Description from the seller
culture: Viking (Scandinavian / Northern Europe)
Artefact: Openwork finger ring
Period: Early Middle Ages, 9th – 11th century AD
Material: Bronze with natural patina
Dimensions: Inner diameter: ca. 22 x 18 mm , height: 12 mm
Condition: Intact, very fine archaeological condition. No modern restorations or chemical cleanings performed.
A finely crafted bronze ring featuring an elegant openwork design composed of repeating triangular and diamond-shaped motifs. The broad band is decorated with pierced geometric cutouts framed by raised intersecting lines, creating a striking lattice-like appearance. The surface exhibits a rich dark green to black patina, consistent with age and long-term oxidation of a copper-alloy metal. The textured exterior and handcrafted construction give the piece a distinctive archaeological character, reflecting both decorative artistry and practical wearability.
The ring's symmetrical geometric pattern allows light to pass through the open sections, enhancing its visual depth and highlighting the craftsmanship involved in its creation. A compelling example of historic metalwork, it would appeal to collectors of antiquities, ancient jewelry, and early decorative arts.
