オパールは比較的低温で沈殿し、岩石の裂け目のほぼすべての種類に形成される可能性があり、最も一般的には藍鉄礦（リモナイト）、砂岩、流紋岩、泥灰岩、玄武岩とともに見られます。高品質オパールは内部色の変化する相互作用を示します。
