Description from the seller
Monumental Roman Wine Transport Amphora (Dressel 1 Typology) with Authentic Marine Concretions & Custom Stand (122 cm)
Culture/Period: Roman Republic / Early Empire (Approx. 2nd Century BC - 1st Century AD)
Typology: Af. Dressel 1
Material: Terracotta, natural marine calcification, custom wrought iron stand
Dimensions: Total height on stand: 122 cm | Height of the amphora only: approx. 117 cm
Historical & Archaeological Significance
An exceptional and monumental Roman terracotta transport amphora of the Dressel 1 typology, recovered from a submarine environment. Measuring nearly 1.2 meters on its own, this specific form was the primary vessel utilized during the Late Roman Republic for the lucrative maritime trade of premium Italian wines (often from Campania and Etruria) across the Mediterranean and into Gaul.
The amphora retains its classical, highly functional fusiform (spindle-like) profile, featuring a long, robust cylindrical neck, a thick rim, and twin vertical handles. This specific aerodynamic design was masterfully engineered by Roman potters to allow dense, interlocking stacking within the hulls of ancient merchant vessels (naves onerariae).
Aesthetic Profile & Condition
What elevates this artifact from a standard archaeological artifact to a museum-quality sculptural piece is the spectacular, naturally formed marine encrustation (coralligenous growth) crowning its upper section. Centuries of submersion on the seabed have transformed the ancient ceramic into a unique marine monument.
The piece offers a striking textural and chromatic contrast between the smooth, engineered terracotta body and the rugged, fossilized marine life that entirely envelopes the neck and mouth.
Condition: Excellent authentic condition. The core terracotta structure is sound, solid, and intact in its primary form. The heavy marine encrustations are completely solidified and stable. The piece displays standard surface wear, minor authentic abrasions, and a beautiful underwater patina consistent with its age and centuries spent submerged.
Display: The amphora is presented on a high-quality, custom-made wrought iron stand tailored specifically to its proportions, ensuring total structural stability while enhancing its verticality.
Provence: French old collection before 1970
Sold with a legal invoice, certificate of authenticity and a Spanish export licence
Premium Shipping & Logistics
Due to the monumental size, extreme fragility, and high value of this piece, standard parcel shipping is strictly excluded. The item is currently secured inside a heavy-duty, custom-built wooden shipping crate
