⸻
“Masterpeace” reinterprets Jacques-Louis David’s celebrated masterpiece The Intervention of the Sabine Women (1799), one of the defining works of European Neoclassicism and a timeless symbol of reconciliation and peace. Across this iconic composition, a bold hand-painted graffiti reading “PEACE” interrupts the historical image, collapsing more than two centuries of visual culture into a single contemporary gesture.
Rather than acting as an act of destruction, the intervention becomes an act of reinterpretation. The spontaneous language of graffiti enters into dialogue with one of the great masterpieces of Western art, questioning ideas of authorship, cultural value and artistic authority. By bringing together museum heritage and urban expression, the artwork explores how historical images continue to evolve when viewed through the visual language of the present.
