Offered here is a hand-carved Central African tribal mask, attributed on stylistic grounds to the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, representing the Lukwakongo type.

Carved from a single piece of dense tropical hardwood, the mask features the characteristic elongated heart-shaped face, prominent vertical nose and restrained geometric facial design associated with Lega carving traditions. The eyes retain their original cowrie shell inlays, while the lower section preserves its original raffia fiber attachment.

The unpainted wooden surface, deep natural patina and honest wear indicate long-term traditional use and age.

Comparable masks are associated with the Bwami society of the Lega people, where they served ceremonial and educational purposes during initiation rituals and community ceremonies.

Provenance

From the collection of Stanisław Wadecki, Polish traveler, collector and dealer specializing in African tribal art.

Wadecki spent more than twenty years travelling and working throughout Central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, where he assembled an extensive collection through field collecting.

Condition

Original unrestored condition.

Beautiful natural patina with age-related wear, surface abrasions and minor shrinkage cracks consistent with age and traditional use. The original raffia fibers and cowrie shell eyes remain intact.
