Ryūkōhō — Natsume Tea Caddy with Spring and Autumn Maki-e (Cherry Blossoms and Maple Leaves)
This elegant black lacquer natsume (chū-natsume, medium-size tea caddy) is decorated with a refined maki-e design combining cherry blossoms and maple leaves — a motif known in Japanese as "shunjū makie" (spring–autumn design), symbolizing the changing seasons and allowing the piece to be used year-round in the tea ceremony. Against a deep black lacquer ground, the blossoms and leaves are rendered in shimmering gold, warm amber, and soft coral-red tones, with a delicate dusted texture (nashiji-style shading) on several of the larger leaf motifs that catches the light beautifully.
The piece comes complete with its original wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed with the title "中棗" (Chū-natsume) and "春秋蒔絵" (Spring-Autumn Maki-e), signed by the artist and stamped with a red seal — confirming its authenticity as an artist-signed piece intended for use in chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony.
