Description from the seller
Vintage Double-Sided Japanese Enamel Advertising Sign – Hiroichi Soy Sauce / Fujiboshi Soy Sauce
This authentic double-sided Japanese porcelain enamel sign represents two regional soy sauce brands—Hiroichi (ヒロイチ) on one side and Fujiboshi (フジボシ) on the reverse—offering a fascinating glimpse into Japan's rich tradition of local brewing and family-owned food producers during the Showa era.
This distinction was far more than a marketing phrase. Before the widespread adoption of industrial seasoning, naturally brewed soy sauce symbolized patience, craftsmanship, and authenticity. Produced through months of fermentation using soybeans, wheat, salt, and carefully cultivated koji, brewed soy sauce formed the foundation of Japanese cuisine and everyday life.
One face displays the bold Hiroichi (ヒロイチ) brand beneath a striking red circular emblem, while the reverse features Fujiboshi (フジボシ) with a distinctive logo inspired by Mount Fuji and a three-star motif, creating a memorable visual identity rooted in traditional Japanese symbolism. Such unique trademarks helped regional breweries establish trust and recognition long before the age of television advertising.
During the Showa period, enamel signs like this were mounted outside neighborhood grocery stores, soy sauce dealers, and family-run food shops throughout rural Japan. Their porcelain enamel finish offered exceptional durability, allowing the vivid colors to withstand decades of sun, rain, and changing seasons while remaining visually striking.
Whether displayed in a collection of vintage advertising, a Japanese-inspired interior, restaurant, café, or culinary space, this rare double-sided sign captures the enduring heritage of Japanese soy sauce brewing and the bold graphic aesthetics that defined the Showa era.
