An attractive antique Japanese iron tsuba (sword guard) dating to the Edo period (1603–1868).
The tsuba features an elegant rounded mokkō-shaped form with finely executed sukashi (openwork) decoration of scrolling vines and foliage. Small remnants of gold-colored inlay or nunome-zōgan remain within the design, enhancing the visual contrast against the dark iron patina.
The iron has developed a rich, aged surface consistent with antique Japanese sword fittings. The central nakago-ana retains its copper sekigane inserts, indicating traditional adjustment for mounting on a sword tang.
This piece would make an excellent addition to a collection of Japanese sword fittings or Asian decorative arts.
