Item Description
This striking Hakata Ningyo (Hakata clay doll) captures a dramatic moment from the celebrated Kabuki play "Kanjincho," portraying the warrior-monk Benkei mid-stride, one hand raised in a commanding gesture, the other gripping a wooden kongo staff, with a sutra bag tied at his obi. The figure is the work of master craftsman Kojima Kazuyoshi Kojima Kazuyoshi（1925-2002）, nephew and direct disciple of the legendary Hakata Ningyo "meijin" Kojima Yoichi. It exemplifies the expressive sculptural realism for which Hakata Ningyo — a Traditional Craft designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry — is renowned.
The doll is finished in vivid mineral pigments over fired clay, its blue-green kimono scattered with pinwheel roundels over a cream hakama, with finely carved facial features in the bold "aragoto" style of Kabuki acting. It stands on a black lacquered wooden base bearing a small wooden nameplate inscribed "名門" (Meimon, "distinguished house"), and comes in its original wooden tomobako storage box inscribed "名門 博多人形" with the artist's signature.
A wonderful collector's piece for admirers of Japanese traditional crafts, Kabuki theatre, or fine folk sculpture.
