欧州の斧がしばしば薄く平べったいまたはずんぐりとしているのとは対照的に、サハラの斧は長く円筒状で丸みを帯びたこの形を頻繁に示し、平刃を明確には持たず、特定の柄の嵌合に適しています。この形態はテネレ地域とニジェール・ニジェロ＝チャド地域のコレクションにも見られます。
材料と地質
地質の多様性は、地元資源を利用していたサハラの生産を特徴づける典型例です：
玄武岩とダロライト 砂岩または石英岩 花崗岩
多用途の道具：これらの筒状の斧は主に木材加工（伐採、荒削り）に用いられたが、植物の粉砕のための撹拌棒やローラーとしての可能性のある機能もあり、これはニジェロ＝チャド新石器時代で二重機能として裏付けがある。
時期：この種の道具は湿潤なサハラ新石器時代に関連し、通常は紀元前8,000年から紀元前3,000年の間に位置づけられる（テネレのような地域では紀元前2,000年までとされることもある）。この時期、サハラは牧民と採集狩猟民が暮らすサバンナであった。
