Fragility IV – A Threshold of Self continues Dana Vasile’s exploration of identity as a condition of perpetual transformation. Moving from fracture to multiplicity, the self converges within a single body, dissolving the boundaries that once separated the various facets. Identity becomes a shifting threshold rather than a stable form.

The overlapping faces resist hierarchy. None occupies the position of an original or authentic self. Instead, they exist simultaneously, emerging and receding through one another, as a suggestion that identity is less a fixed essence than an accumulation of memories, perceptions and emotional states that cannot be fully reconciled.
Executed în multiple layers of oil paint, the composition balances expressive immediacy with formal restraint. Broad passages of warm flesh tones are interrupted by vivid blues, reds and greens, allowing colour to articulate psychological movement rather than physical volume. The dark background isolates the figure, intensifying the sensation that the transformation unfolds.

Rather than presenting fragility as weakness, Fragility IV proposes it as the condition that makes change possible. It is within this openness, where certainty dissolves and identities overlap, that the portrait finds its emotional and visual force.
