The "Thracian Rider" (also known as the Thracian Horseman or Heros) is a prominent ancient Balkan religious and artistic motif.
The Thracian horseman, also known as the Thracian Rider, encompasses both the elite cavalry warriors central to ancient Thracian society and a recurring iconographic motif in art that symbolizes a youthful hero or deity, typically depicted charging on horseback with a spear or hunting wild animals. These figures emerged among the Thracian tribes inhabiting the Balkans from around 1500 BCE, with the horseman motif becoming prominent in the 4th century BCE through Hellenistic and Roman periods, appearing on over 2,000 stone reliefs, bronze statuettes, and silver artifacts from tombs and sanctuaries.
