燧石の研磨は画期的な技術進歩を示しており、考古学者はこれを中石器時代と新石器時代の境界を示す指標として用いる。
磨かれた燧石の斧は土地を耕作できるようにする技術的進歩を示しており、それを使って大きな木を伐採して畑を作るスペースを作ることができた。しかしこれらの斧は家や柵を建てるとき、または薪を刻むときにも用いられた。道具であるだけでなく、斧には重要な儀礼的・社会的機能を持つこともあった。新石器時代を通じて斧の形は変化した。最初は“点付き”で、次に薄い柄、そして最後に厚い柄となった。
