日本茶道金工の最も尊崇される名のひとつに静かに威厳を放つブロンズの像。
この karakane（鋳 bronze）製の器はヒシャク立て—that is, 茶道で竹の柄杓を置く台として伝統的に用いられるスタンドだが、その elegant なボトル形状は花瓶としての用途にも同様に適している。長く細い首は、浮き彫りの輪状モチーフが連なるカラ—のような細工が施された襟を高く持ち上げ、胴は膨らんで丸みを帯びた底部へと広がり、全体に落ち着いた安定感を与える。
深いアンバー系の褐色の錆色は豊かで光沢を宿し、表面は熟成したブロンズのみが放つ柔らかな輝きを捉える。
作は中川丈餘（Nakagawa Joeki）の署名があり、元箱（友箱：tomobako）とともに原産の証として添えられている。茶道美術の収集家に高く評価される provenance の印である。
【作家略歴】
中川丈餘は、千家十職の一つである千家 十職の頭領の姓を受け継ぐ家系である。鉄器職人としてこの十家の中に属し、江戸時代初期から茶道具の風炉釜・水壺・蓋置など、上質な金属器を製作してきた。元々は越後国の甲冑鍛冶で、初代は千利休自らの要望により茶道具の制作を始めた。三代目はこの系譜の中で最も優れた鋳造技術者として称えられ、難解な沙ヒリ alloy 技術を再発見したとされる。十一代丈餘は2008年に没しており、以降この名を冠する作品は限定的なものとなっている——この名を持つ作品はごく限られた作家的遺産を意味する。
