この1990年にドイツ民主共和国が発行した10マルクの記念硬貨は、ドイツ観念論の代表的な思想家の一人である哲学者ヨハン・ゴットリーブ・フィヒテを顕彰するものである。正面には、演説または朗読の態度で司式台の脇に立つフィヒテが、知的・学術的な活動を強調する写実的かつ細密な描写で示されている。裏面には、国章が国の名と額面の記載に囲まれて配置されている。優美で高度な保存状態で、浮彫ははっきりとし、表面は光沢があり、盤面はほぼ欠陥のないMS65の特質を備えている。この発行は歴史的にも顕著な意義を持ち、1990年10月のドイツ再統一直前の東ドイツの存続最後の年の発行であったことから、同国が発行した最後の記念貨幣のひとつとなっている。
