オパールとは、水分含有量が3〜21%の水和硅酸塩の一種です。実際、この水分 permeability がオパールをハイドロフィル（親水性）にしている要因です。
オパールは relatively low temperature（比較的低温）で沈着し、ほとんどあらゆる岩石の割れ目に現れることがあり、最も一般的には酸化鉄を含む石（リモナイト）、砂岩、流紋岩、泥灰岩、玄武岩とともに見られます。貴石のオパールだけが内部色の変化する遊色を示します。
顕微鏡的なスケールでは、貴石のオパールは直径約150〜300 nmの二酸化ケイ素の球体が六方最密充填格子または立方最密充填格子で配列された構造で成り立っています。これらの秩序だったガラス状の球体は、オパールの微細構造を通過する光の干渉と回折を引き起こすことにより、内部色を生み出します。
