オパールは水分含有量3%から21%の水和形の二酸化ケイ素です。実際、水分に対する透過性こそがオパールを親水性にしています。
オパールは比較的低温で堆積し、ほとんどあらゆる種類の岩の亀裂に発生します。最もよく見られるのはリモナイト系、砂岩、流紋岩、泥灰岩、玄武岩に見られます。貴宝石オパールだけが内部色の変化する遊色を示します。
顕微鏡スケールで見ると、プレシャスオパールは直径約150〜300 nmの二酸化ケイ素の球が、六方最密充填または立方最密充填格子を成しています。
これらの規則正しいシリカの球が、オパールの微細構造を通過する光の干渉と回折を引き起こすことで内部色を生み出します。
