Amazing gilt-lacquered wood figure of Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀如来 (Amitābha).
Amida, the Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Life and principal deity of Pure Land Buddhism. Its is shown seated in dhyanasana (meditation posture), his hands lowered in mida no jō-in 弥陀定印, the meditation mudra of Amida. He wears loosely draped robes opening at the chest and falling in voluminous, cascading folds.
The serene face is characterised by heavy-lidded downcast eyes inlaid with crystal, gently arched brows. The hair is arranged in tight curls rising over a domed ushnisha.
