古代エジプトの石膏サラブ/スカラベには裏面に刻まれた情景が描かれている。表面には洗練された造形の頭部と額板が浮き彫りにされ、前胸部と翅鞘は線刻の短い線で形成されている。裏面には中央に大きな人物像が描かれ、両手にそれぞれワニを握って立っている。スカラベは吊り下げ用に長手方向に貫通されている。裏縁の右上に欠けがある。
古代エジプト人にとって、護符は装飾的なだけでなく、呪術的な力としての日常的な実用品でもあった。多くの護符はミイラの包布の内側で見つかっており、来世への安全な旅立ちを確保するためとされているが、護符は生者による守護や願いを叶えるためにも用いられてきた。護符の意味はその形状やタイプによって異なり、人間または動物の形をした神を描く小さな護符は、着用者を守護する力をもたらすと信じられてきた。
