Dimensions from 17 mm to 26 mm. All pictures are taken with high resolution camera on bone dry material and on different backgrounds in order to depict the opal as realistically as possible.

オパールは水含有率が3％から21％の水和型の二酸化ケイ素です。実際、この水分透過性こそがオパールを親水性にしています。
オパールは比較的低温で沈着し、ほとんどあらゆる種類の岩の亀裂に生じ得ます。最も一般的には酸化鉄を含む岩や砂岩、流紋岩、泥質岩、玄武岩などとともに見られます。貴石としてのオパールだけが内部色の変化を伴う遊色を示します。
微視的なスケールでは、貴石オパールは直径約150〜300nmのシリカ球が六方最密接近格子（ヘキサゴンまたは立方最密）を形成して構成されています。これらの規則正しいシリカ球が、オパールの内部色を生み出すため、光の干渉と回折を引き起こします。
