Original early 20th‑century Chinese Baotou rug pillar cover with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation, titled "Vintage/Antique Chinese Baotou Wool Rug pillar cover - Imperial \"Jiangya Lishui\" Dragon & Endless\"", measuring 250 cm by 136 cm.
Description from the seller
Description:
A classic and highly decorative Chinese wool rug from the Baotou-Suiyuan weaving tradition, dating back to the early-to-mid 20th century. This piece is a wonderful translation of traditional Qing Dynasty court robe textiles into the medium of hand-knotted carpet art.
Design & Iconography:
The Field: Features an ascending stylized indigo-blue dragon amidst scrolling clouds and symbolic motifs, most notably a beautifully rendered Endless Knot / Mystic Knot (盤長紋) on the left side, which represents longevity and infinite wisdom.
The Lower Border: The bottom of the rug features a prominent and culturally significant "Jiangya Lishui" (Ocean Waves and Cosmic Mountain Clifftops) border, mimicking the protective imperial emblems found on court robes, complete with a red coral branch motif.
The Palette: Dominated by a highly desirable, soft, and muted earthy palette of camel, beige, soft terracottas, and sage greens. The natural vegetable dyes have developed a lovely, subtle abrash (chromatic variation) over time.
