Mezcala Stone Figure – West Mexico, ca. 500 BC – AD 250
西メキシコ産のメスカラ人身像、紀元前500年頃～紀元後250年頃
約500年BC～AD250年頃と推定される、西メキシコ産のメスカラ人像です。緑がかった灰色の石で刻まれており、メスカラ伝統で知られる高度にスタイライズされ抽象的な美学を示しています。単純化された人間形は、目・口・腕を示す微妙な凹部のディテールによって定義されています。
メスカラ彫刻は、卓越した幾何学的抽象と控えめな洗練さで称賛されています。人間像の簡素化された表現は、西メキシコで先行古典期・初期古典期に花開いた独特の美術伝統を反映しており、儀礼的および葬儀目的で用いられたと考えられる例が含まれます。
本像は総じて非常に良好な状態で、頭部に年代相応の小さな欠けがあるのみです。
