Takaoka Copperware Cast Bronze Vase with 菊紋 Chrysanthemum Crest — by Houun (峰雲)

A slender, pear-shaped bottle vase in Takaoka copperware. The surface is finished in a deep blue-to-charcoal marbled patina, its tonal gradations forming an organic, cloud-like pattern. Over this ground, fine gold speckling has been applied across the entire body — catching the light from every angle and scattering into countless glints of gold against the subdued blue-grey base, giving the piece a rich sense of depth. A gilt sixteen-petal chrysanthemum crest (applied seal) on the body adds a refined accent.

Takaoka copperware traces its origins to the early Edo period, when the Maeda clan of Kaga invited seven foundry craftsmen to the city of Takaoka — a tradition now spanning over 400 years. From this foundation, the "karakane imono" technique of chasing and coloring cast bronze pieces such as flower vessels and Buddhist implements developed, and by the Meiji era the craft had gained international recognition through exhibition at the Paris World's Fair. This vase carries that traditional casting and decorative technique forward.

The piece is signed Houun (峰雲) on the accompanying wooden box, which bears the artist's hand-written inscription and seal. A wooden tag noting a commendation award further supports the piece's provenance.
