Item Description
This is a nezumi-Shino (鼠志野 / grey Shino) tea bowl (chawan) in the Mino tradition, bearing an impressed kiln mark on the body reading Sōhō (宗峰), accompanied by its original wooden storage box.
Nezumi-Shino — literally "mouse-grey Shino" — is one of the most refined and prized variants of Shino ware, produced by applying iron slip beneath the characteristic thick feldspar glaze, which fires to a subtly mottled grey-white surface of extraordinary depth and quiet beauty.
This bowl exemplifies the genre with great character: the exterior is wrapped in a soft, cloud-like grey-white glaze with fine pinholes and gentle bubbling throughout, while warm russet and iron-brown tones break through at the lower body and foot rim, creating a natural landscape effect (kesshō) that changes with every viewing angle.
On one side, a faintly drawn motif — a stylised pagoda or architectural form — emerges ghost-like beneath the glaze, lending the piece a meditative, ink-wash quality.
The interior (mitsugomi) is left partially unglazed, revealing the warm sandy clay body with its distinctive throwing rings — a hallmark of authentic Mino Shino craftsmanship.
The foot (kōdai) is broad and confidently cut, with natural kiln grit adhesions and glaze pooling adding further character.
