— 歴史的にはZandeおよびNzakaraの高度な軍隊によって武器として用いられてきた刃物であるこの種のナイフ、kpingaと呼ばれるものは20世紀には時代遅れとなり、実用的な道具としてよりも象徴的な对象となった。祖先を称える儀式の際に特に用いられ、力ある男の葬儀で扱われ、さらには埋葬地へ投げ込まれたり墓の上に置かれたりもした。権力の象徴として強力であり、貴族の専有物とみなされ、倉庫に保管・保護されることが多かった；自宅にkpingaを所持する特権を与えられたのはごく少数の男性だけであった（Westerdijk『The African Throwing Knife』1988年より）。
