Item Description
讃岐漆器 Sanuki Shikkei 彫漆 Choshitsu Carved Lacquer Vase with Gilded Blossoming Tree Design
This flower vase is worked in choshitsu (carved lacquer), one of the Three Techniques of Sanuki Lacquer Art (Sanuki Shikkei) alongside kinma and zonsei, established in Kagawa Prefecture by Tamakaji Zokoku. In this technique, numerous layers of colored lacquer are built up over the surface and then hand-carved with a chisel to create raised, dimensional patterns.
The body depicts a single tree trunk rising straight upward, covered in countless blossoms, with the trunk rendered in gold. Bamboo leaves and plum branches accompany the design. The carving is worked on both the front and the reverse side, allowing the piece to be enjoyed from either angle. The precision of the carving and the depth created by the layered lacquer are the standout features of this piece. At approximately 30cm in height, it makes a striking presence.
Size
Height: 30 cm
Diameter: 10 cm
Weight: 1295 g
Include
Original 桐箱 kiribako (paulownia wood) box and an 共布 accompanying cloth wrap (tomonuno)
Condition
Good overall condition with some dirt and wear from age. At the base, an area where the layered lacquer beneath the surface is exposed gives a rust-like appearance, though this is not actual rust. The box bears a signature that is illegible, so the artist cannot be identified.
