ビザンツ帝国の陶器容器で、中空の球形の胴体を持ち、底部が尖っています。上部は短い首部へと立ち上がり、厚い縁を備えた小さな開口部があり、現在は損傷しています。胴体と肩の周りを囲むように、細い彫刻線が刻まれています。こうした品は「Greek Fire」として知られる爆発性液体で満たされ、手榴弾として使用されていたと考えられています。表面には土着の付着物が覆っています。摩耗の兆候は年齢と一致するもので、胴体には擦り傷、窪み、欠けなどが見られます。開口部は損傷しています。
Greek Fire（液体の炎）は、ビザンツ帝国の arsenalで最も有名な武器の一つであり、何世紀にもわたりアラブの襲撃から帝国を救ってきました。防御と攻撃の双方での使用があり、ビザンツ帝国の存続に大きく寄与しました。可燃性混合物の配合は長い間機密とされ、帝国の崩壊後には取り返しがつかないほど失われました。その正確な組成は今日までも不明ですが、研究では石油が重要な成分であったと示唆されています。平均的な大きさと握りから、短期戦の手投げで用いられたことを示唆しますが、長距離戦闘や海戦での手榴弾の使用を否定するものではありません。むしろ投石機で投げられた可能性が高いと考えられます。
