ビザンティン様式の陶器容器で、中空の球形本体を持ち、基部に向かって少し細くなる。上部は短く狭い首部と厚い縁を持つ小さな口部へと立ち上がる。容器は大きな凹刻円を装飾し、首の周囲を囲み、胴体には対になるように配置されている。さらに本体の下部には凹刻の点と円が装飾される。この種の品は「Greek Fire（ギリシャ火）」と呼ばれる爆発性液体で満たされ、手榴弾として使用されたと考えられている。肩部にはひび割れと欠けがあり、表面には土質のこびりつき、へこみ、欠損が見られる。縁には欠けがある。
ギリシャ火は、液体の炎としても知られ、 Byzantine の兵器庫の中で最も有名な武器として、何世紀にもわたりアラブの襲撃からビザンティン帝国を守ってきた。防御と攻撃の両方の場面で使用され、帝国の生存にとって重要な役割を果たしてきた。可燃性混合物の配合は何世紀にもわたり厳重に管理され、帝国崩壊後に不可逆的に失われた。その正確な成分は今日まで不明のままであるが、研究は原油を重要な成分として示唆している。平均的な大きさと握りから、手作業で近距離戦闘で投げられたと推測されるが、長距離戦闘や海戦での説を排除するものではない。石弓などで投げられた可能性も高い。
