This is an elegant Japanese jingasa (samurai hat) dating from approximately the late Edo to Meiji period.

The exterior is finished in deep black lacquer with a smooth, understated surface that highlights the dignified simplicity of traditional samurai equipment. At the front is a finely rendered gold family crest that appears to be the Iori ni Mokkō (庵に木瓜) crest, standing out beautifully against the glossy black lacquer.

Unlike heavily ornamented ceremonial jingasa, this example reflects the refined aesthetic often favored for practical use, where the family crest serves as the principal decorative element while also expressing the identity and status of its owner.

About the Iori ni Mokkō Crest
The Mokkō (quince-flower) motif is one of Japan's oldest and most widely used heraldic designs. It has long symbolized prosperity, stability, and noble lineage, and was adopted by numerous samurai families throughout Japanese history.

The Iori (hermit's hut) element placed above the Mokkō creates a distinctive variation of the crest, giving it a balanced and elegant composition while preserving its traditional symbolism.

Jingasa
