Description

This is an Iga ware matcha tea bowl entitled “Igaguri.”

It is a powerful piece with the rustic character typical of Iga ware, showcasing the natural firing effects for which this pottery is highly regarded.

Iga ware is one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic traditions, produced in what is now Iga City, Mie Prefecture (formerly Ueno City). Iga is also internationally known as the home of the ninja, and its pottery is admired for its robust clay texture and dramatic natural kiln effects.

The highlight of this tea bowl is its beautiful cascading vidro glaze. The translucent pale green glaze flows naturally from the rim across the surface, creating a striking contrast with the rugged clay body. This naturally formed vidro effect is one of the defining characteristics of Iga ware, making each piece unique.

The interior also displays attractive natural firing effects, giving the bowl a strong presence whether used in the tea ceremony or appreciated as a work of ceramic art.

The original wooden storage box is inscribed “Iga Tea Bowl – ‘Igaguri’”, and the accompanying booklet identifies the artist as Shingen and states the place of production as Ueno City (present-day Iga City). The original box and booklet are included.

Dimensions

* Diameter: approx. 12.2 cm
* Height: approx. 8 cm

Condition

No noticeable chips, cracks, or repairs. Overall, the tea bowl is in good condition.

As a handmade piece, it has a slight wobble when placed on a flat surface due to a minor irregularity in the foot ring. The rim is also naturally uneven. These are characteristics of the handmade production process and are not considered defects.

The kiln effects, rustic clay texture, and flowing glaze are original features of the work and contribute to its unique character.

Please refer to the photographs for further details.

Included

* Original wooden storage box
* Original booklet (shiori)
