サハラで、石材の白い球体に似た物は、一般に球状体（スフィアロイド）またはボーラスであり、2百万年前ごろから新石器時代までの期間に人類祖先が削孔した石製の先史時代の artefakte（ artefacts）です。石灰岩や緑碧岩のような明るい岩石からしばしば加工されることが多く、槍玉や投射具、砧砥などの用途の特定は専門家の間でなお議論されています。
これらの先史球体の主な特徴 Typologie（類型）: 球度の程度に応じて、考古学者は三つのカテゴリに分類します：多面体（角ばっている）、スフィロイド（面がある）、ボーラス（完全な球体）。
