オパールは水分を含む二水状シリカであり、水分含有量は3%〜21%の範囲です。実際、この水分の透過性こそがオパールを親水性にしているのです。
オパールは比較的低温で沈着し、岩石のひび割れのほぼすべての種類に見られる可能性があり、最も一般的にはリモナイト、砂岩、流紇石（リオライト）、石灰質頁岩、玄武岩とともに見つかります。宝石品質のオパールだけが内部色の変化する相互作用を示します。
