イスラム文化 – 西暦11世紀から13世紀 AD のブロンズ製サイン式指輪
円形の刻印面には、スタイライズされた放射状の太陽モチーフが刻まれています。デザインは中央の円形領域を多数の刻まれた光線が取り囲み、中世イスラム美術でよく見られる太陽光の放射状パターンを作り出しています。こうした幾何学的・象徴的モチーフはイスラム世界全体で好まれ、個人の物品には実体像の代わりに抽象的な装飾が用いられることが多かったのです。
指輪は頑丈な鋳造構造で、広いバンドと高めの覆輪を特徴とします。長い年月の埋蔵によって美しい緑褐色のパティーナが生じており、摩耗があるにもかかわらず刻まれた装飾はなお見える状態です。デザインの素朴さと象徴的な太陽象徴は、中世イスラム金属工芸の美学的伝統を反映しています。
