Takaoka Bronze Vase by Itasaka Tatsuji - Green-Patina Ovoid Vessel

This bronze vase from Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) bears the handwritten signature and seal of the artist Itasaka Tatsuji(板坂辰治), inscribed on the inner lid of its wooden storage box (共箱). The surface displays a rich, layered green patina, an intentional decorative finish rather than aging), articulated by three horizontal incised lines that circle the bulbous body.

The vase's restrained, architectural silhouette pairs a slender neck with a full, rounded body, allowing the deep green tonal shifts and the three defining lines to carry the entire visual composition. The base is inscribed as a commemorative piece. It functions equally well as a working ikebana (華道) vessel or as a striking standalone object for interior display.

Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) is a traditional craft of Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, dating to 1611, when the local feudal lord Maeda Toshinaga invited seven foundry masters to the castle town to develop its metalworking industry. The region's artisans work across everything from large temple bells to vases, tea utensils, and Buddhist altar fittings, and Takaoka today accounts for the majority of Japan's cast metalware output. The craft was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1975.
