滑らかな磨きと経年の風合いが美しく、太鼓の下には大きな紐通し穴を備えた、細密に彫られた作りです。
根付とは、漢字の根（ね）と付け（つけ）から成り、「根をつける＝取り付ける」という意味を持つ、日本の小さな彫刻です。元々は着物の帯（obi）に物を留める留具として用いられてきました。19世紀後半から、ヨーロッパとアメリカで非常にコレクターズアイテムとして人気を博し、多様な題材、美しい細部、経年美、そして触感の強さが称賛されました。
