特定の道具（権力の杖、笏、ハエたたきなど）は、首長または王の機能に exclusive な属性であり、私たちはそれをレガリアと呼びます。これらは首長の権力の物的象徴です。
権杖（コマンド・スタッフ）もまた、アフリカの王たちの象徴として長い間用いられてきました。場合によっては、王権と結びついて権力と繁栄を喚起する男性器の象徴的役割を果たしたこともあります。
