Exceptional Antique Walker's "Cherub" Mark II Brass Taffrail Ship Log – Thomas Walker & Son, Birmingham, England – c. 1912 – In excellent condition – No reserve.

Offered is an original solid brass Walker's "Cherub" Mark II Taffrail Ship Log, manufactured by the renowned British nautical instrument maker Thomas Walker & Son of Birmingham, England. Introduced during the Edwardian period, the Cherub Mark II became one of the most widely used mechanical ship logs aboard merchant vessels, naval craft, yachts and fishing boats throughout the first half of the 20th century.

Mounted on the vessel's taffrail (stern rail), the instrument was connected to a long line and a towed bronze rotor (not included). As the ship moved through the water, the rotor rotated the line, driving the precision internal gearing and accurately recording the vessel's speed and total distance travelled in nautical miles. Before electronic navigation, these instruments formed an essential part of traditional dead-reckoning navigation.
