Description from the seller
Knobbed Sea Star (Protoreaster sp.) – Calituban Island, Philippines
A beautiful specimen of Protoreaster sp., collected in the waters surrounding Calituban Island, Philippines, at an approximate depth of 14 meters.
Recognizable by its robust five-armed form and distinctive conical tubercles, this sea star displays the characteristic sculptural appearance that has made the genus one of the most appreciated among marine collectors. The dorsal surface is richly textured with calcified plates and prominent spines, while its natural coloration blends warm sandy beige, cream, and delicate peach tones.
Well preserved and naturally dried, the specimen retains its attractive symmetry and crisp surface details. The underside also shows the well-defined ambulacral grooves and tube-foot channels typical of the species, making it equally interesting from a scientific perspective.
Minor natural wear and small surface irregularities are consistent with its marine origin and preservation, adding authenticity without affecting its decorative appeal.
A charming and authentic marine specimen, ideal for natural history collections, cabinets of curiosities, coastal interiors, or educational displays.
Protoreaster nodosus – Horned Sea Star
A beautiful and well-preserved specimen of Protoreaster nodosus, commonly known as the Horned Sea Star or Chocolate Chip Sea Star. Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region, this iconic species is admired for its striking sculptural form and distinctive raised conical nodules.
This specimen displays a rich combination of warm orange, peach, and sandy tones, enhanced by naturally lighter tips on the prominent dorsal “horns.” The textured surface is densely covered with fine granulation, creating remarkable visual depth and tactile detail throughout the body.
Its five robust arms and symmetrical structure give the piece a strong decorative presence while maintaining the authentic organic character of the species. The large elevated nodules create dramatic relief and make this specimen especially eye-catching from every angle.
A refined and unusual natural object, ideal for collectors, coastal interiors, cabinets of curiosities, or marine-themed displays.
An impressive marine specimen combining bold geometry, natural texture, and warm coloration in a truly iconic starfish form.
