Permissions（写真家エマ・ハーディの初のモノグラフ）は、母性と子どもの時代への優しい記録であり、愛と切望、そして故郷を離れることを綴る繊細な記録である。本に収められた写真はハーディ自身の個人アーカイブから集められ、20年にわたる期間を横断する。

写真は身近な家庭のありふれた瞬間と、より理想的な光景が織り交ぜられている。

写真は創作と仕事を母親業と両立させようとするハーディの試みを示している— 子どもたちが成長し変わる様子と、母自身との関係が育まれていくのを見守る様子。

本は章ごとに分かれており、各章は家族の家で過ごした最後の春にささげられた、家庭菜園の大判の花の静物で始まる。

物語が進むにつれて、ハーディの子どもたちはますます自立していき、画外へと旅立ち始める。

家族が家を離れたことで、作品は自然の終結を迎えた。
